Socks what are them and why you need them?

If you just started lurking around on the Dark web markets and foruns. Time and time again you will read someone talking about Socks or selling them.

But the reality is you have no clue at all what they are.

Basically a sock is a point of entrance to your connection. And with that "information" websites can find out if the IP address that you are using really is your own, or if you are using some proxy server or a VPN service.

Contrary to "proxies" a Sock will not last for a long time! When you get a sock it will probably work only for a few hours, if you are lucky you can get it for 1 or 2 days.

Using a Sock is not really a safety concern. Normally you are quite safe by using a good VPN and setting up your browser/OS in the right way. But if you are trying to use a family member credit card online (with their permission obviously) and you get card declined errors again and again, it may very well be because your location is different from the owner CC location and some websites like Paypal will check your Socks, among a huge list of other details, like your OS, Browser version, screen resolution, etc. If any of those will not match you get the infamous card declined :)
